GOING FOR GYMNASTICS GLORY 🥇

Following the must-see trials for swimming and track & field, the gymnastics gworls are ready to hit the floor for the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials, and we’re pretty flippin’ excited. 😉

Gymnasts have the opportunity to compete in balance beam, floor, uneven bars, and/or vault. Minneapolis will welcome an incredible slate of competitors, including Jade Carey, Simone Biles, and Suni Lee, who are ready to bring their best in hopes of qualifying for Paris.

HOW TO QUALIFY 😅

While most athletes who compete in the swimming and track & field trials qualify for the Olympic roster solely by placing in their event, gymnastics works a bit differently. Whichever athlete wins the all-around title at trials will automatically make the U.S. Olympic roster, but the other four gymnasts will be chosen by the Athlete Selection Committee. This committee considers gymnasts’ performances at trials, plus their performances throughout the last year of competitions.

Spotlight: Legends of the Past 🔦

Dominique Dawes

Is there anything Dominique Dawes can’t do? Dawes competed for Team USA in three Olympic games: Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, and Sydney in 2000. She and her teammate, Betty Okino, were the first Black women to win gold medals in gymnastics. Dawes earned one gold medal and three bronzes during her time with the team.

Since retiring from the sport, Dawes has appeared in Grease on Broadway, become an Emmy-winning producer, and now owns her own gymnastics centers.

Dominique Moceanu

Even as a small child, Dominique Moceanu was an elite gymnast. At her first major national meet, she became the youngest gymnast in American history to win the all-around title at just 14 years old.

Moceanu was so talented that despite missing the Olympic trials due to a fracture in her leg, she still made the 1996 Olympic team based on the strength of her scores alone. To this day, Moceanu is the youngest U.S. gymnast ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
