Challenging the Status Quo 💭

Somehow, in 2024, there’s still no decathlon for women at the Olympics. Despite many women campaigning for it, there will be only a heptathlon at this year’s Paris Olympics, while the men’s Olympic decathlon will begin on August 2.

A Timeline of Women’s Multi-Events

1964: The pentathlon (five events) is introduced at the Tokyo Games, marking the first multi-event for women to compete in.

1984: At the Los Angeles Games, the heptathlon (seven events) replaces the pentathlon.

2000: Women’s pole vault is introduced at the Sydney Games.

2024: To this day, even though women now do all the individual events, the Decathlon remains a glaring inequality in track and field.

What is a Decathlon? 🏟️

The decathlon is an athletic challenge comprising ten track and field events. After the athletes compete in all ten events, a winner is crowned based on an overall score. A decathlon winner is often dubbed the “World’s Greatest Athlete,” as the event requires intense athleticism across various skill sets.
